Senior, Captain, Matt Keene (Berlin, NH), Junior Andy Basque (Westborough, MA) and Junior Zach Hutton (Bennington, NH) are the middle of the UNH Baseball team's lineup. Basque hits third and plays left field, Hutton hits fourth and is the designated hitter for the pitcher, and Keene hits fifth while playing first base. As the pre-season was winding down this fall, the trio garnered the nickname "The Bomb Squad" in reference to their power hitting the ball; but little did anyone know eighteen games later, the staggering impact these three would have.
They say in baseball that the numbers don't lie and after looking at their statistics you would think the numbers were lying. One of the most noticable statistics in baseball is batting average, and the key component of that statistic is hits; The trio have a combined 58 hits which represent 40% of the Wildcats hits so far this season. Of those 58 hits, 20 of them were for extra base hits; 14 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs and if you add all of those up, they represent 53% of the UNH Baseball Team's extra base hits. One may pose the question, "They are hitting well and for power, but are they doing it in key situations with runners in scoring positions?" To answer that question you can look at the Runs Batted In category. Keene, Basque and Hutton have a combined 45 RBI out of a team total of 96 RBI; 46% of their run production.
When asked what has been the key for his team leading 18 RBI this season Keene said "Hitting after Hutt and Basque I am almost garanteed to have guys on for me and it really helps me see better pitches with two great hitters up before me. Its really a team effort this year, all the guys in the top of the line up have been getting on all year."
Basque would add, "We are really coming together as a group and it's helping us win ballgames."
It seems as "The Bomb Squad" goes, so will the Wildcats.
